Stories That Endure
In Eastern North Carolina, the stories are everywhere—in the weathered grain of a plank from an old barn, in the bend of a blackwater creek, in the rise of a covey of quail. Stories rooted in place, and resonant with history. For more than 30 years, T. Edward Nickens has been a voice that brings wild places to life.
An author and journalist with leading magazines from Our State to Garden & Gun, Field & Stream to Smithsonian, Nickens travels highways, byways, tracks, and trails to find the stories that give a glimpse into the heart and soul of his beloved Coastal Plain.
Old-timers who remember the “sparkin’ place” at the end of Harkers Island. Old trails through the Croatan. Nights in the Roanoke River wilds. The quiver of a bird dog’s flanks when quail are close. For Nickens, stories are everywhere across Eastern North Carolina. Listening to the land, and the people crafted by the land, has been a lifelong quest for one of the region’s most prolific writers.
